Watermarks anywhere on the ceilings of your home are a concern. If you walk outside your home and you can see that you have rusty gutters, you need to fix your gutters and the shingles at the base of your home.
There could be damage that goes beyond what you are seeing on the ceiling inside of your home. Here are a few of the things to talk with the roof repair team about when you get a quote for the work that needs to be done.
If the old aluminum gutters on your home are rusted, they aren't doing the job needed to carry water away from the home. Instead, water is running down the side of the house, and possibly pooling at the base of the roof.
Look into getting yourself some new vinyl gutters installed by the roofing repair company. These gutters are resistant to:
- Water, rain, and humidity
- Sun damage or discoloration
- Scratches and dents
You may even want to get screens that go over your gutters. With new gutters and downspouts, you will find that water will travel away from the house as needed.
If water was not being held and redistributed by the gutters, you may have leaks going down the side of your home and at the roof base. This means you may have to replace the soffits, some flashing, wood at the base of the roof, and shingles.
Ask the roofing contractors about adding insulation if necessary to the base of the roof, or if there are any ventilation concerns. If there are leaking and damaged soffits and flashing, the ventilation system may not be working properly in the roof.
Have the roofing company do a full inspection of the roof to see if there are damages in any areas besides where you can see water stains. Once the roofing repairs are completed, you will have to address the water stains inside your home.
The stains will need to be treated with a sealant that kills fungi and bacteria to protect the home from mold and mildew. From there, a fresh coat of paint and any drywall repairs should do the trick.
Water stains in the home should never be ignored. Contact a company in your area, such as Berwald Roofing Inc, to find out what they think is wrong with your roof and gutters and to get a quote.
